USES FOR LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL

Lavender is one of the most useful herbs I know. It can be used in cosmetics, for first aide, to help change your mood, for cooking, for cleaning and just because it smells good!
Today I'll show you how useful a bottle of simple lavender essential oil is and follow up in the upcoming week with recipes and formulas you can make to incorporate this wonderful herb into your daily life. AVOID LAVENDER DURING THE FIRST TRIMESTER OF PREGNANCY OR IF YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE IS EXTREMELY LOW. Be sure to purchase pure essential oil and not fragrance oil. The fragrance oils are synthetic and don't have the same properties as the real thing.

1.ZAP A ZIT- a drop of lavender essential oil on a pimple will dry it up in no time! Lavender is anti bacterial.

2.MINOR BURNS- apply ice cold compresses for 10 minutes, then immediately apply a couple of drops of lavender essential oil to the affected area. Seek medical attention for serious burns!

3.MINOR SCRAPES-bathe the area with 2 cups of warm water that you have added 5 drops of lavender essential oil to. This treatment is especially good for pets as they tend to lick their wounds and the lavender oil won't hurt them if they do. This is for MINOR wounds. As with burns, seek medical attention for anything serious or deep.

4.SLEEP AIDE- Mix one half teaspoon of lavender essential oil with 4 tablespoons of good vodka. (No, we aren't going to drink this one!) Pour into a 4 ounce bottle with a spritzer bottle and top off with water to fill the bottle. To use, shake well then lightly spritz your sheets and pillow. Lavender helps you relax. The vodka helps the water evaporate faster and the lavender oil to disperse through the water. Sweet dreams!

5.MONSTER UNDER THE BED OR IN THE CLOSET-YIKES!- Use the same formula as the sleep aide to make a very effective "monster" repellent. If your child can't sleep because she's afraid there's a monster under the bed, take out your "Monster Repellent" and generously spritz the area it's hiding in! Make a colorful label for the bottle declaring it to be 100% percent effective. The lavender will help your child (and the "Monster") relax and fall asleep.

If I were to recommend one essential oil to have on hand it would definitely be lavender. It's a natural antibiotic, antiseptic and antidepressant which promotes wound healing, scares off monsters and smells great!

There are many good books out there on essential oils and aromatherapy. Do your research before using an oil you are unfamiliar with, and stop using it if it causes an unwanted reaction, (everyone is different!) and please seek medical attention for any allergic reaction.

Thanks for visiting! Gail

Myrrh and Patchouli

Before I get into the uses for these wonderful essential oils I would like to share the importance of doing a patch test before using a new botanical in any of your preparations. It's simple and only takes 15-20 minutes to find out if you or someone else is sensitive to an oil or botanical. Put a drop of the essential oil in question on a cotton ball and dab the inside of your arm right below the elbow. If any redness, itching or irritation occurs within the next 15-20 minutes avoid using that substance in any of your creations. MYRRH ~Myrrh has a warm, resinous scent that is soothing in states of stress, panic, fear, confusion and apathy. To use for this purpose, place a drop or two of the essential oil in a diffuser or bowl o f hot water to help disperse the scent throughout the room. A more portable solution is to take a whiff or two straight from the bottle. ~Myrrh is anti-inflammatory, anti fungal, antimicrobial and antiseptic making it a good addition to topical preparations...

Purple Coneflower- Echinacea purpurea

The echinacea is in full bloom here in the northeast. It is a beautiful plant that is very easy to grow. Purple coneflower, as it is commonly known, grows to 2-4 feet in height and prefers a well drained site in full sun. It doesn't mind poor soil. In fact, if the soil is too rich, you may have to stake your plants. The Native Americans used echinacea for a wide range of ailments from colds to snake bites and external wounds. They also threw on the coals in the sweat lodge for purification. It is now known that echinacea is an immuno stimulant that increases the production and activity of white blood cells, lymphocytes a nd macrophages. It also increases interferon production which is used by the body to fight viral infections like the cold and flu. Echinacea should not be used continuously because that will decrease its effectiveness. Also, those with auto immune or progressive conditions like lupus and multiple sclerosis, should consult their doctors before using. If you have an ...
